Repair Procedure

1. Verify the alternator is not charging by checking system voltage with a volt meter.

2. Remove the alternator.

Refer to the Technical Information System (TIS) 2009 model year RAV4 Repair Manual:

Power Source/Network - Battery/Charging - "2AR-FE Charging: Generator: Removal"

3. Remove the alternator pulley cap. Use a screwdriver to puncture the center of the alternator pulley cap and pry it off.

NOTE

Do NOT reuse the alternator pulley cap.

4. Inspect the alternator pulley clutch.

A. Insert the SST (P/N 09820-63020-02) part B into the hex key at the end of the alternator shaft.

B. Hold the alternator pulley with one hand and attempt to turn the alternator shaft with the SST The alternator shaft should freewheel clockwise and

lock counterclockwise.

C. Does the alternator clutch operate correctly?

YES - Go to step 5.

NO - Go to step 6.

5. If the alternator clutch is operating correctly inspect the charging system. Refer to TIS 2009 model year RAV4 Repair Manual:
