Axle Shaft: Service and Repair

Removal

1.

Raise and support rear of vehicle, then remove wheel and tire assembly.

2.

Using suitable jack, raise No. 2 suspension arm, Fig. 10, until horizontal. Scribe reference marks between axle shaft and side gear shaft flanges.

3.

With assistant applying brakes, loosen, then remove six axle shaft-to-side gear flange attaching bolts.

4.

Remove cotter pin and locknut cap from outer end of driveshaft. With assistant applying brakes, loosen, then remove locknut.

5.

Using suitable plastic mallet, drive axle shaft from rear wheel hub and remove from vehicle.

Overhaul

1.

Inspect driveshaft as follows: 

a. Ensure that there is no play in the inboard and outboard joint.
b. Ensure that inboard joint slides smoothly in thrust direction.
c. Ensure that there is not excessive play in the radial direction of the inboard joint.
