Axle Shaft: Service and Repair
Axle Shaft Assembly, Constant Velocity Type

Disassembly/Assembly

1.

Place axle shaft in a suitable vise, then make sure there is no play in inboard and outboard joints.

2.

Ensure inboard boot slides smoothly in thrust direction and that there in no radial play in U-joints.

3.

Check boots for damage, then remove inboard joint clamps.

4.

Place matchmarks on inboard joint tulip and tripod, then separate inboard joint tulip from driveshaft.

5.

Remove snap ring from tripod joint, then place matchmarks on shaft and tripod, using a suitable brass punch.

6.

Remove tripod joint from shaft, using a hammer and suitable drift.

7.

Remove inboard joint boot, then the outboard joint boot clamps and boot. Do not attempt to disassemble outboard joint.

8.

Remove dust deflector.

9.

Temporarily install new dust deflector, then wrap vinyl tape around spline of shaft and install boot with new clamps to outboard joint.

10.

Temporarily install boot with new clamps to inboard joint and driveshaft.

11.

Place beveled side of tripod axial spline toward outboard joint, then align matchmarks previously marked. Tap tripod joint into driveshaft using a
suitable drift, then install snap ring.

12.

Apply .43-.44 lbs. of grease included with boot kit into boot, then assemble boot to outboard joint.

13.

On Pickup & 4Runner models, apply .60-.62 lbs., or on Van models, apply .47-.50 lbs. of grease included in boot kit to inboard tulip and boot,
then assemble inboard joint to inboard joint tulip. Align matchmarks, then insert inboard tulip to driveshaft. Install boot to inboard tulip.

14.

On all models, install both boot clamps, then bend bands rearward and close clamps.

15.

Measure assembled length of boot without boots stretched or contracted, Fig. 8. Length should be 15.705 inches.
