Tacoma 2WD L4-2.4L (2RZ-FE) (1996)
1. Inspect steering rack.
a. Using a dial indicator, check the rack for runout and for teeth wear and damage.
Runout: 0.30 mm (0.0118 inch) Maximum
b. Check the back surface for wear and damage.
2. Inspect bearing.
a. Check the needle roller bearing for pockmarks or damage. If faulty, replace the rack housing.
b. Apply molybdenum disulfide lithium base grease to the inside of the bearing.
3. If necessary, replace bushing.
a. Using a screwdriver, loosen the 3 claws of the bushing, and remove the bushing from the rack housing.
b. Coat a new bushing with molybdenum disulfide lithium base grease.
c. Install the bushing into the rack housing, making sure to align with the 3 holes.
4. Inspect bearing. Check the bearing rotation condition and check for abnormal noise. If the bearing is worn or damaged, replace the steering pinion
assembly.
