Vacuum Brake Booster: Service and Repair
Removal and Installation
REMOVAL

On models with airbag, disable airbag system, refer to Air Bags and Seat Belts/Air Bags (Supplemental Restraint Systems)/Service and
Repair.
2.
On models less airbag, disconnect battery ground cable.
3.
On all models, remove master cylinder as outlined under MASTER CYLINDER.
4.
On 1992-93 Camry and Celica models, push away charcoal vapor canister for better access.
5.
On Supra, remove cruise actuator.
6.
On Supra and 1992-93 Celica models, remove lower finish panel or lower pad as outlined in BODY ELECTRICAL SAFETY AND
ENTERTAINMENT/INSTRUMENT PANELS AND CLUSTERS/COMPONENT R & R/DASH PANELS.
7.
Remove pedal return spring, clip, clevis pin and clevis locknut, Fig. 4.
8.
On Celica, remove ignition coil and igniter.
9.
On 1992-93 Celica, use wrench and service tool No. 09751-36011 or equivalent to disconnect brake line from lefthand front brake hose, then
remove brake line grommet from wheelhouse.
10.
On all models, remove brake booster nuts. Pull out booster and gasket.
INSTALLATION
1.
Adjust length of booster pushrod as follows:
a. Install gasket on master cylinder.
b. Install brake booster pushrod gauge tool No. 09737-00010, or equivalent on gasket.
c. Lower pin until its tip slightly touches the piston.
d. Turn gauge tool upside down and set it on booster.
e. Measure clearance between booster pushrod and pin head of gauge tool.
f. Adjust booster pushrod length until the pushrod slightly touches the pin head.

Install booster and gasket.
3.
Install clevis to operating rod.
4.
Install clevis pin into clevis and brake pedal then install clip to clevis pin.
5.
On 1992-93 Celica, connect brake line to lefthand front brake hose.
6.
Install lower finish panel and undercover.
7.
On Supra, install cruise actuator.
8.
On all models, install master cylinder, fill and bleed brake system.
9.
Check and adjust pedal height and freeplay.
10.
Ensure that brake system is operating correctly.
11.
Arm airbag system, refer to MAINTENANCE PROCEDURES/AIRBAG SYSTEM DISARMING.
