Auxiliary Air Valve (Idle Speed): Testing and Inspection

ON-VEHICLE CHECK:

Engine Cold (below 140°F (60°C)):

1. Start the engine and pinch off the air hose.

Checking Air Valve Operation

2. When the hose is pinched off, the engine rpm should drop and idle should become rough.

Engine Warm (above 140°F (60°C)):

1. Start the engine and allow to reach normal operating temperature.
2. Pinch off the Air Valve hose.

Checking Air Valve Operation

3. When the hose is pinched off, the engine rpm should NOT drop more than 50 rpm.
4. If a problem is found with either test, replace the Air Valve.

Resistance Check:

1. Start the engine and warm-up until coolant temperature reaches 176°F (80°C).
2. Using an ohmmeter, measure the heater coil resistance.

Checking The Air Valve Heater Coil Resistance

Resistance:

40 - 60 Ohms

3. If resistance is not as specified, replace the Air Valve.

OFF-VEHICLE CHECK:
