Starter Solenoid: Testing and Inspection
These tests must be performed within 3 to 5 seconds to avoid burning out the coil.

PULL-IN TEST
1.
Disconnect field coil wire from terminal C.
2.
Connect negative battery voltage to both magnetic switch body and terminal C.
3.
Connect positive battery voltage to starter terminal 50, Fig. 8.
4.
Ensure pinion gear moves outward.
5.
If pinion gear movement is not as indicated, replace magnetic switch.
HOLD-IN TEST
1.
Install test equipment as described under PULL-IN TEST
2.
With pinion gear out, disconnect negative lead from terminal C.
3.
Ensure pinion gear remains out.
4.
If pinion gear returns inward, replace magnetic switch.
PLUNGER RETURN
1.
Install test equipment as described under PULL-IN TEST
2.
Disconnect negative lead from magnetic switch body.
3.
Ensure pinion gear moves inward.
4.
If pinion gear movement is not as indicated, replace magnetic switch.
NO-LOAD PERFORMANCE
1.
Connect suitable ammeter negative lead to terminals both 30 and 50.
2.
Connect ammeter positive terminal to positive battery terminal.
3.
Ensure starter rotates smoothly and steadily with pinion gear moving out.
4.
Refer to SPECIFICATIONS/MECHANICAL SPECIFICATIONS/STARTER MOTOR SPECIFICATIONS for standard amperage.
