Steering Gear: Service and Repair
With Manual Steering

Removal/Installation

2WD

1.

Raise and support front of vehicle, then remove front wheel and tire assemblies.

2.

Remove cotter pins and nuts from tie rod ends, then using suitable puller, separate tie rod ends from steering knuckles.

3.

Make reference marks on torque shaft and pinion shaft, then remove coupling set bolt.

4.

Remove three bevel gear attaching bolts, then the bevel gear. Disconnect torque shaft from pinion shaft.

5.

If equipped with power steering, disconnect power steering pressure and return lines from gear housing.

6.

On all models, remove steering gear attaching bolts, then the steering gear from vehicle.

7.

Reverse procedure to install. Tighten to specifications.

4WD

1.

Remove front differential assembly.

2.

Remove cotter pins and nuts from tie rod ends, then using suitable puller, separate tie rod ends from steering knuckles.

3.

Remove undercover, then make reference marks on torque shaft and pinion shaft and remove coupling set bolt.

4.

Remove three bevel gear attaching bolts, then the bevel gear. Disconnect torque shaft from pinion shaft.

5.

Disconnect power steering pressure and return lines from gear housing.

6.

Remove steering gear attaching bolts, then the steering gear from vehicle.

7.

Reverse procedure to install. Tighten to specifications.

Disassembly/Assembly

Disassembly

1.

Place steering assembly in suitable vise, then mark position of tie rod and rack end for reference during assembly. Remove tie rod ends, Fig. 3.

2.

Remove clip and clamp, then remove rack boot.

3.

Unstake claw washer, mark left and right rack ends to aid reassembly, then remove rack ends and claw washer using suitable tools.

4.

Remove rack guide spring cap locknut, then the spring cap, spring, rack guide and guide seat.

5.

Remove pinion bearing adjusting screw locknut, then the adjusting screw.

6.

Pull rack from pinion side until notched portion of rack is aligned with pinion, then remove pinion together with upper bearing.

7.

Pull rack out through pinion side of assembly to avoid damaging bushing.

Inspection & Repair

1.

Check rack for wear, damage or excessive runout. If runout exceeds .012 inch, the rack should be replaced.

2.

Inspect rack bushing for damage. If damage is evident, remove bushing using tool 09612-24013 or equivalent. When installing bushing, ensure the
three bushing claws align with holes in rack.

3.

Inspect pinion oil seal for damage. If seal requires replacement, drive out with suitable socket. Drive new seal into position using tool
