Brake Rotor/Disc: Service and Repair

On 2 wheel drive models, proceed as follows: 

1.

Remove caliper and torque plate as an assembly.

2.

Remove grease cap, cotter pin and locknut.

3.

Remove outer wheel bearing and flat washer, then remove disc.

4.

To install, assemble disc and bearings on axle. Torque locknut 21 ft. lbs., then seat bearings by rotating hub several times and back off nut until
finger tight. Using a spring scale attached to hub stud, measure and record rotation frictional force of oil seal.

5.

Tighten hub locknut until starting hub preload is .8-1.9 lbs. more than measurement obtained in step 4 with spring scale, then install lock cap,
cotter pin and grease cap.

6.

Install caliper and torque plate assembly. Torque mount bolts to 77 ft. lbs.

On 4 wheel drive models, proceed as follows: 

1.

Remove caliper and torque plate as an assembly. Suspend caliper assembly aside with suitable wire. Leave brake hose attached.

2.

Remove hub cap from hub flange, then the bolt from end of axle shaft. Remove hub attaching nuts, then using brass drift and hammer, remove
cone washers from hub.

3.

Install suitable bolts into hub flange, then tighten evenly to remove flange.

4.

Remove locknut (if equipped), then lock washer. Using suitable socket, remove hub attaching nut, then the disc, hub and bearings.

5.

Install hub, bearings and disc assembly, then the outer bearing and nut. Torque nut to 43 ft. lbs., and rotate hub several turns in either direction to
seat bearings.

6.

Back off hub nut until finger tight, then torque to 11 ft. lbs. Using suitable spring scale attached to wheel stud, measure preload. Preload should be
4.6-7.9 lbs.

7.

Install lock washer and locknut (if equipped). Torque locknut to 35 ft. lbs. and measure preload as described in step 6. If preload is satisfactory,
bend over lock washer. If preload is not satisfactory, adjust as necessary and bend over lock washer.

8.

Install bolt into end of axle shaft. Torque to 13 ft. lbs.

9.

Install hub, then caliper and torque plate assembly. Tighten torque plate attaching bolts to 83 ft. lbs.
