Impact Sensor: Testing and Inspection
Side Airbag Sensor (for Rear Side)
SUPPLEMENTAL RESTRAINT SYSTEMS: SIDE AIRBAG SENSOR (for Rear Side): ON-VEHICLE INSPECTION
ON-VEHICLE INSPECTION
CAUTION: Be sure to follow the correct removal and installation procedures of the side airbag sensor.
1. INSPECT SIDE AIRBAG SENSOR (VEHICLE NOT INVOLVED IN COLLISION)
(a) Perform a diagnostic system check See: Air Bag Systems/Testing and Inspection/Reading and Clearing Diagnostic Trouble Codes/DTC Check
/ Clear.
2. INSPECT SIDE AIRBAG SENSOR (VEHICLE INVOLVED IN COLLISION AND AIRBAG HAS NOT DEPLOYED)
(a) Perform a diagnostic system check See: Air Bag Systems/Testing and Inspection/Reading and Clearing Diagnostic Trouble Codes/DTC Check
/ Clear.
(b) Visually check the side airbag sensor for defects if a center pillar of the vehicle or the area around a center pillar is damaged.
(1) The defects are as follows:

Cracks on the sensor housing
-
Dents on the sensor housing
-
Chips on the sensor housing
-
Cracks or other damage to the connector
-
Peeling of the label
-
Damage to the serial number
OK:
No defects are found.
HINT: If any of the defects is found, replace the side airbag sensor with a new one.
3. INSPECT SIDE AIRBAG SENSOR (VEHICLE INVOLVED IN COLLISION AND AIRBAG IS DEPLOYED)
(a) When airbags have deployed as the result of a collision, be sure to replace all side airbag sensors in the damaged areas (anywhere in need of
repair).
(b) Visually check the side airbag sensors in undamaged areas for defects.
(1) The defects are as follows:

Cracks on the sensor housing
-
Dents on the sensor housing
-
Chips on the sensor housing
-
Cracks or other damage to the connector
-
Peeling of the label
-
Damage to the serial number
OK:
No defects are found.
HINT: If any of the defects is found or a side airbag sensor has detected a major collision, replace the side airbag sensor with a new one.
