Crankshaft Bearing Play, Check (Determine Crankshaft Bearing Play with Plastigage)  

  Remove, Disconnect   

Remove crankshaft bearing cap from cylinder block.  

  Install, Connect   

Place Plastigage (1) in oil-free crankshaft bearing journal and attach to cylinder block with old bolts - 88 Nm/65 lbf. ft.   Notice:  "Plastigage" is available for various tolerance ranges via the catalogue   "Opel/Vauxhall Workshop Equipment".   Permissible tolerance ranges:   PG-1 in green 0.020 to 0.075 mm.   PG-2 in red 0.050 to 0.150 mm.     Do not turn crankshaft. Remove crankshaft bearing cap from cylinder block.

  Inspect   

Compare width of squashed plastic thread with scale. Permissible crankshaft bearing play: 0.020 mm to 0.058 mm.   Permissible main bearing play:       New crankshaft   Used crankshaft   0.030 to 0.058 mm   Max. 0.100 mm.       Tighten (Torque)    Crankshaft bearing cap with new bolts to cylinder block - 88 Nm/65 lbf. ft.

  Inspect   

Note the following when selecting main bearing shells:   Main bearing shells are divided into three classes. The class depends on the bore diameter for main bearing shells in the cylinder block and is identified by one digit per cylinder in the cylinder block, see F4489, top.   The inner diameter of the main bearing shell depends on the outer diameter of the main bearing journal. Depending on diameter, the crankshaft webs are marked with "-" or "- -". The digits (1 to 5) refer to the relevant main bearing journals. The (1) refers to the main bearing journal on the left in illustration F4489, bottom; the others to each of the main bearing shells on the right. Using these codes, the bearing shell with the corresponding bearing play can be selected - see "Technical Data".
