Field Remedy: 0978

Remedy:

Check the knock sensor plug for continuity and correct seating.
The knock sensor should be tested in accordance with checking procedure
(Chapter C18/19) and not simply exchanged without testing.

If no fault is found exchange the engine control unit with a
serviceable item.

As of 03. July 1996 only O.K. engine control units have been produced.

The production date can be seen through 2 cutouts in the engine
control unit casing. A bar code and 16 figure identity number can be
found on the identity label inside the ECU. The last 4 digits of this
number should be 6061 or higher for the remanufactured parts, and 6183
or higher for the new parts.
Where 6=year of manufacture and 183=day of manufacture,
in this example 01. July 1996.

The control unit should be programmed using CD-ROM 30.

If replacement of the ECU does not clear the fault follow the
procedure detailed below:

- Check the contact surface of the knock sensor for flatness and 
  if required use an Aluminium plain washer between sensor and 
  cylinder to ensure contact.

- Torque knock sensor with 20 Nm (do not use Loctite).

- Continuity check earth cable of the knock sensor (Example: 
  wiring diagram Vectra-B shielded cable knock sensor to 
  terminal D15 of ECU)
