Camshaft and Cam Follower, Remove and Install (Cylinder Head Installed)  

  Remove, Disconnect   

Remove toothed belt cover - see operation "Front Toothed Belt Cover, Remove and Install (1.4 / 1.6 Ltr. Engines except 16 LZ2)" or "Front Toothed Belt Cover, Remove and Install (1.8 / 2.0 Ltr. Engines and 16 LZ2)".  

Before removing the toothed belt - at the fastening bolt of the toothed belt driving sprocket, set the crankshaft in the direction of rotation of the engine 60 ° (Dimension I) before the TDC mark. For 1.4 / 1.6 ltr. engine except 16 LZ2: move the toothed belt tension roller upwards against the spring force until the holes are aligned and fix the toothed belt tension roller with a suitable mandrel (1). For 1.8 / 2.0 ltr. engine until MY '93: loosen fastening bolts of the coolant pump and rotate coolant pump anticlockwise with KM-637. For 1.8 / 2.0 ltr. engine from MY '93 and 16 LZ2: loosen fastening bolt of the toothed belt tension roller and rotate the adjustment eccentric in the direction of the arrow (in the clockwise direction) until the pointer (2) is just before the left-hand stop.   Mark running direction of the toothed belt. Remove toothed belt from camshaft sprocket.

  Remove, Disconnect   

Detach engine vent hoses from camshaft housing cover. Detach camshaft housing cover from cylinder head. Remove camshaft pulley - counterhold with open-ended wrench on hex of camshaft.  

14 NV: detach fuel pump from camshaft housing - fuel hoses remain connected.  

Engines with ignition distributor: remove ignition distributor - see operation "Ignition Distributor, Remove and Install".  

Remove seal ring from rear camshaft housing - see operation "Seal Ring in Camshaft Housing, Rear, Replace (C 14 SE as of MY '93, 16 NZR, C 16 SE, X 16 SZ and X 16 SZR)" or " Seal Ring in Camshaft Housing, Rear, Replace  
(1.8 / 2.0 Ltr. Engines and 16 LZ2)".  

Remove thrust plate (1) from camshaft housing.     Important!    Mask oil return bores in cylinder head during assembly to prevent thrust pieces falling in.

  Remove, Disconnect   

1.4 / 1.6 ltr. engines except 16 LZ2: attach Valve Depressor MKM-891 to camshaft housing. 1.8 / 2.0 ltr. engines and 16 LZ2: attach Valve Depressor MKM-890 to camshaft housing.   Press down all cam followers evenly. Remove camshaft (1) from camshaft housing. Release valve depressor and remove from camshaft housing. Remove cam follower and thrust pieces - lay aside in installation position, note allocation.     Inspect    Check all parts for damage and wear, replace if necessary. If replacing camshaft, replace all cam followers.     Important!    Before installing camshaft, check that crankshaft is at 60 ° before TDC mark.

  Install, Connect   

Insert thrust pieces and rocker arms - note installation position and order. Install valve depressor on camshaft housing and depress all rocker arms evenly - crankshaft must be 60 ° before DTC mark. Coat sliding surfaces with MoS 2 -sliding paste (grey). Insert camshaft in camshaft housing.   Install pressure plate (1) at camshaft housing - tightening torque 8 Nm/6 lbf. ft.   Release tension in valve lifter depressor and remove from camshaft housing.   Attach seal ring to rear camshaft housing - see operation "Seal Ring in Camshaft Housing, Rear, Replace (C 14 SE as of MY '93, 16 NZR, C 16 SE, X 16 SZ and X 16 SZR)" or " Seal Ring in Camshaft Housing, Rear, Replace (1.8 / 2.0 Ltr. Engines and 16 LZ2)".   Engines with ignition distributor: install ignition distributor - see operation "Ignition Distributor, Remove and Install".   For 14 NV: Attach fuel pump to camshaft housing with new gasket - tightening torque 18 Nm/13 lbf. ft.   Install camshaft sprocket - see operation "Fit replacement sealing ring in camshaft housing, front".
