Important Instructions for Operations on Automatic Transmissions

Remove the underride protector if required for operations which are performed from below the vehicle. When installing, ensure the tightening torque of 20 Nm/ 15 lbf. ft. is correct.

Before disassembling the transmission, carry out an fluid pressure check in accordance with the test instruction "4-speed Automatic AF 13/14/20/22". The diagnoses made during this will facilitate targeted repair work.

When Disassembling:

During all operations on automatic transmission, ensure utmost cleanliness of the components and tools. Malfunctioning of the transmission is often caused by dirt and foreign objects.

Disconnect the ground lead from the battery before working on the automatic transmission.

Clean removed parts after disassembling, check for wear and damage. If defective seal rings are found when disassembling, inspect grooves and seating surfaces for foreign objects, burr formation or damage.

If metal chippings or clutch lining remnants are found when draining fluid, disassemble transmission completely and clean. If foreign objects are found when flushing converter, replace converter.

When Disassembling (Continued):

If a defect is found where floating particles could get into the fluid (bearing or gear is run in, clutch is burned), the valve body must be disassembled for washing. In doing so, proceed with utmost caution, as inner parts of valve body are not available as single parts. In particular, do not damage the piston seal rings and springs, do not lose retaining wedges. The electro-hydraulic pressure regulator is not available as a single part and if defective must be replaced together with the valve body complete.

When disassembling the valve body, set aside pistons, springs and valves as installed to avoid confusion, note position of the balls. Thoroughly wash the valve body - in particular the bore holes and ducts - and then blow dry. If in doing so chippings, scoring or other damage to functioning surfaces are visible, replace the valve body (complete).

When placing attaching parts in vice, always use soft protective jaws.

If incorrect values are found when spin torques are measured, disassemble the relevant attaching part and overhaul bearings.

Before processing cements and sealing compounds, check the date of expiration. Products stored past this date must not be processed.

The retaining pin of Transmission Holder KM-910 (AF 13) and KM-694 (AF 20) is designed to be turnable and can be stopped after every, turn so that a favourable installing position can be attained. Exception: When loosening housing bolts and separating housing parts, always keep transmission fixed horizontally (auxiliary housing points upwards), as assemblies could become loose and fall out.

When Assembling:

Object Number: 616201 Size: DEFAULT  Important!

Always renew gaskets and securing elements, do not overstretch retaining rings.

When re-installing, immerse components and bolts in transmission fluid. Insert bearings and gaskets in Assembly Grease 19 42 530 (90 093 210), if necessary cement to the relevant installation locations.

Blow dry all attaching parts - especially the ducts - after using cleaning agents. Function checks are usually carried out with low pressure air (4 bar); use pressure reducing valve and adjust appropriately.

Lay new clutch discs and brake bands in transmission fluid at least 2 hours before installing.

The position and installation location of thrust bearings and thrust washers can be seen in illustrations F 2241 (AF 13) and D 0517 (AF 20) at the beginning of section "Assemblies, Install in Transmission".

Install housing parts with sealing compound.
