Check and correct transmission fluid level (AF40)

Important:   The following procedure contains 2 work processes:
1. Filling: Prefill transmission fluid with engine off, after repair work on transmission, removal and installation / exchange of gearbox or axle shafts. After prefilling with the engine off, the transmission fluid level must be checked with the engine running.
2. Checking: Check transmission fluid level and correct with engine running.

Note:   The oil level must only be checked and corrected if necessary, together with the fluid temperature, see TECH 2, after repairs on the transmission, oil loss, gear change problems or power transmission problems after changing gear. Ensure that only the appropriate transmission fluid for AG40 is used when topping up. LUREF_1.gif

  Inspect

1.   Test conditions:
•   The vehicle must be parked on a level surface.
•   Selector lever in position "P
•   Engine off
•   Connect TECH 2
Delete fault memory
2.   Unscrew fluid filling bolt (1)

Object Number: 10678760 Size: DEFAULT

Important:   If the transmission fluid level is merely checked, proceed with Step 8.
3.   Prefill transmission fluid when exchanging gearbox and after repair work - engine off
•   Place collecting pan underneath.
Important:   The rising tube (3) must not be unscrewed to check the fluid level. With the fluid checking bolt unscrewed, oil runs out of the rising tube to the oil level (6) at the upper edge of the rising tube
The rising tube may be turned out only for emptying the transmission (1). In this case, the seal (2) on the rising tube must be replaced.
4.   Unscrew fluid checking bolt (5) from rising tube
5.   Top up with transmission fluid until it runs out of the rising tube
Note:   Allow transmission fluid to run out until it just drips out
6.   Tighten fluid checking bolt 8 Nm
Note:   Replace O-ring (4)

7.   Top up transmission fluid via fluid filler port
•   Top up with 0.5 litres transmission fluid and continue from step 8
8.   Check transmission fluid level and correct with engine running.
Important:   The transmission fluid level must be checked correctly with the engine running at 70° to 80°C transmission fluid temperature.
9.   Start the engine and allow it to run until the end of the test
10.   Shift through the gear selector positions while depressing the foot brake
•   Shift selector lever from position "P" to "D" and back to "P", maintaining each position at least 2 seconds
Repeat this procedure 2 times
•   Check transmission fluid temperature with TECH 2 (see data list parameters)
Unscrew fluid checking bolt
Allow the transmission fluid to run out until it drips out of the rising tube. If it does not, top up with transmission fluid and then allow it to run out until it is just dripping out of the rising tube.
Tighten fluid checking bolt with new O-ring 8 Nm
Top up with 0.5 litres of transmission fluid
Switch off engine
11.   Tighten fluid filling bolt with new seal ring 40 Nm
