Assistance with Analysis if There are Complaints of Noise in Manual Transmissions

Note:   Complaints of noise in the drive train do not always originate in the manual transmission. The table below should assist in reducing noise complaints about manual transmissions.


Before starting diagnostic work, see all corresponding Field Remedies (TSB)

Vehicle stationary and engine idling

Complaint: Noise only occurs if the clutch is depressed

Bearing noise

Vibrations on the clutch pedal

Check clutch plate

Check clutch thrust bearing

Knocking

Noise audible in lower rev. range

Continue search for faults on engine

Rattling

Release clutch pedal quickly

Check shims between engine and gearbox


Complaint: Noise occurs both with the clutch depressed and inactive

Vehicle in motion

Complaint: Noise only occurs if the clutch is not depressed

Whining, howling

Noise becomes worse if Forward or Reverse gear is engaged and at higher revs

Replace corresponding cog of forward or reverse gear and gear block

Noise becomes worse at higher vehicle speed (irrespective of gear engaged)

Replace differential gear

Noise becomes worse at higher revs (or after gear change)

Replace corresponding cog and gear block

Rattling

Audible on acceleration from low speed

Replace corresponding cog and gear block

During shifting

Check clutch, check axle shaft/intermediate shaft

Rattle

On load change, when starting off (forward/reverse)

Replace differential gear

Grinding

In all gears

Replace differential gear

 

In certain gears

Replace corresponding gear shaft bearings


Complaint: Source of noise cannot be defined by the fault-location process described

Search for or localise noises in the area of the axle bearing, wheel bearing and axle shafts
