Gear Shift Assembly, Remove and Install
(M20/M32)
 Remove
| 1. |
Remove battery support
|
| 2. |
Remove hydraulic modulator with ABS-control unit 
Note: Collect escaping
brake fluid.
|
| 3. |
Remove bracket for hydraulic modulator
|
|
| 4. |
Detach 2x gearshift cables (2) from transmission
| • |
Detach 2x gearshift cable from shift linkage lever
|
| • |
Remove 2x shift cable from counterhold
| – |
Draw 2x retaining ring (1) backwards
|
|
|
|
|
Important: The shift forks in the
gearbox must not be moved - risk of gearbox damage.
|

Release shift mechanism assembly
|
|
|
Important: The following diagrams
show the transmission open for the sake of clarity.
|
| 6. |
Pull the shift mechanism assembly (2) out of the transmission
in the direction of the arrow as far as the stop in the
transmission housing (1)
Note: Pull the shift
mechanism assembly out approx. 3 cm.

| 7. |
Turn the shift mechanism assembly clockwise (arrow) approx.
30° - 45°
|

|
| 8. |
Pull the shift mechanism assembly in the direction of the
arrow
Note: Only pull the
shift mechanism assembly out of the transmission until the lower
edge (1) of the upper shift finger (2) is visible.

|
| 9. |
Turn the shift mechanism assembly anticlockwise (arrow) approx.
30° - 45°
Note: until the guide
peg (2) is in line with the threaded hole (1).

| 10. |
Remove the shift mechanism assembly from the transmission
|
|
|
| 11. |
Replace seal ring (1)
|
|
Install
|
Important: Introduce the shift
mechanism assembly into the transmission in stages, in reverse
order.

| 12. |
Install gear shift assembly
| • |
Tighten 2x bolt (1) 20 Nm
|
|
|
|
| 13. |
Attach 2x shift cable (2) to transmission
| • |
Suspend 2x shift cable in counterhold
| – |
Press 2x retaining ring (1) towards the rear
|
|
| • |
Attach 2x shift cable to shift linkage lever
|
|
|
| 14. |
Install bracket for hydraulic modulator
|
| 15. |
Install hydraulic unit with ABS-control unit
|
| 16. |
Transmission Shift Linkage, Adjust
|
| 17. |
Install battery support
|
| 18. |
Bleed brake system and check for leaks
|
| 19. |
Program volatile memories
|
|
