Circuit/System Description
The cylinder pressure sensor is combined with the glow plug. The
engine control module (ECM) provides a 5 V reference voltage,
a low reference and a signal circuit to each cylinder pressure
sensor.
The function receives the position of the pressure maximum in
overrun as input variable and uses it to determine and correct the
displacement of the pressure curve.
The function accomplishes the following tasks:
• |
Determining the exact top dead centre (TDC)
position. |
• |
Correction of the TDC angle displacement based on
the mounting error of the toothed wheel. |
• |
Storing the correction values in the EEPROM. |
Conditions for Running the DTC
• |
The above conditions must be met for at least
0.2 s. |
Conditions for Setting the DTC
The ECM detects that the cylinder pressure sensor signal is out
of range for more than 0.2 s
Action Taken When the DTC Sets
DTCs P0399, P03A1, P03AB, P03B5, P0398, P03A2, P03AC and
P03B6 are Type B DTCs.
Conditions for Clearing the DTC
DTCs P0397, P03A1, P03AB, P03B5, P0398, P03A2, P03AC and
P03B6 are Type B DTCs.

Circuit/System Verification
- Clear the DTCs with a scan tool.
- Operate the vehicle within the conditions for running
and setting the DTC. The DTC should not set.
- Operate the vehicle within the Conditions for Running
the DTC. You may also operate the vehicle within the conditions
that you observed from the Freeze Frame/Failure Records data.
Circuit/System Testing
- Ignition OFF, disconnect the harness connector at the
affected Glow Plug/Pressure Sensor Assembly.
- Ignition OFF, test for less than 5 Ω between the
low reference circuit terminal 1 and ground.
⇒ |
If greater than the specified range, test the low
reference circuit for an open/high resistance. If the circuit tests
normal, replace the K20 Engine Control Module. |
- Ignition ON, test for 4.8-5.2V between the 5 V
reference circuit terminal 3 and ground.
⇒ |
If less than the specified range, test the
5 V reference circuit for a short to ground or an open/high
resistance. If the circuit tests normal, replace the
K20 Engine Control Module. |
⇒ |
If greater than the specified range, test the
5 V reference circuit for a short to voltage. If the circuit
tests normal, replace the K20 Engine Control Module. |
- Verify the scan tool Cylinder Maximum Combustion
Pressure parameter is greater than 10 000 kPa
(1,450 PSI).
⇒ |
If less than the specified range, test the signal
circuit terminal 2 for a short to ground. If the circuit tests
normal, replace the K20 Engine Control Module. |
- Install a 3A fused jumper wire between the signal
circuit terminal 2 and the low reference circuit
terminal 1. Verify the scan tool Cylinder Maximum Combustion
Pressure parameter is less than 50 kPa (7.25 PSI).
⇒ |
If greater than the specified range, test the
signal circuit for a short to voltage or an open/high resistance.
If the circuit tests normal, replace the K20 Engine Control
Module. |
- If all circuits test normal, test or replace the
affected Glow Plug/Pressure Sensor Assembly.
Component Testing
Static Test
- Ignition OFF, disconnect the harness connector at the
affected Glow Plug/Pressure Sensor Assembly.
- Test for 3-12 Ω between the 5 V reference
terminal 3 and the low reference terminal 1.
⇒ |
If not within the specified range, replace the
affected Glow Plug/Pressure Sensor Assembly. |
- Test for infinite resistance between each terminal and
the sensor housing/case.
⇒ |
If not the specified value, replace the affected
Glow Plug/Pressure Sensor Assembly. |
