Airbag Steering Wheel, Remove and Install  

  Remove, Disconnect   

Remove airbag unit - see operation "Airbag Unit, Remove and Install". Observe safety regulations during operations on the airbag!     Important!    When removing steering wheel, move steering column to straight-ahead position. In this position, remove ignition key and turn steering wheel to right or left until steering lock engages.       Remove, Disconnect

Unscrew bolts (1) for fastening contact unit.

  Remove, Disconnect   

Remove lower signal switch panelling halves. Withdraw and disconnect wiring harness plug for contact unit from bracket on steering column.

Remove wiring harness plug for horn from recess at steering wheel. Release wiring harness plug from horn and disconnect.

  Remove, Disconnect   

Bend up locking plate (2) of nut (1) and unscrew nut.

Remove steering wheel from steering spindle using Steering Wheel Puller KM-210-A. Remove with contact unit.     Important!    Do not damage inflator cable!

  Adjust   

Determine centre position of contact unit:   Turn follower (3) in the contact unit (2) anticlockwise to the left until there is a noticeably greater resistance and then turn back approx. 2.5 turns to the right until the marking arrows (1) are flush. Hold the follower (3) in this position, do not turn.

  Install, Connect   

Guide wiring harness plugs for horn and inflator through aperture in steering wheel. Position contact unit carrier (3) with respect to steering wheel so that steering wheel catch lever engages in carrier groove. Bolt contact unit with steering wheel. (Use new bolts)     Important!    After the steering wheel catch lever engages in contact unit carrier groove (3), it must not be actuated until steering wheel is installed and tightened!

  Adjust   

Disengage locking device with steering lock. Set steering to straight-ahead position - see operation "Steering, Straight-ahead Position, Check/Adjust" in group M.     Install, Connect    Slide steering wheel (1) with contact unit (2) onto steering shaft. Guide bolt of switch housing (3) must engage in guide of contact unit. Install retaining plate (2) on steering shaft and tighten steering wheel with nut - tightening torque 25 Nm / 18 lbf. ft. Secure nut.   Note: Installation of locking plate and nut releases contact unit at steering wheel catch lever.   Disconnect horn actuating plug and fasten in steering wheel recess (illus. II)   Connect wiring harness plug for airbag unit and horn and fasten in steering column bracket (illus. III). Install lower horn connection half.   Install airbag unit - see operation "Airbag Unit, Remove and Install".
