Brake Shoes, Brake Linings  

Brake Linings - Drum Brakes, Remove and Install  

Object Number: 616191  Size: DEFAULT  Remove, Disconnect   

Remove both drum hubs/brake drums. For run-in drum hubs, detach parking brake cable from guides. Press parking brake shoe lever inwards using screwdriver until the cam contacts brake shoes.  

Detach upper brake shoe return spring from brake shoe using commercially available brake spring pliers (see illus. I). Note adjustment unit and adjustment lever with return spring.  

Using screwdriver, lever bracket for return spring out of bore in brake shoe and remove (see illus. II). Remove adjustment lever and return spring. Press brake shoe slightly outwards. Remove adjustment unit (see illus. III).  

Turn pressure spring plate with KM-346 until pressure spring can be removed with plate and retaining pin (see illus. IV). Remove front brake shoes, detach return spring. Remove rear brakes shoes, detaching parking brake cable from parking brake shoe levers.

Using suitable drill, drill off rivets from brake shoe and drive out with suitable drift.  

Brake linings are supplied in two thicknesses! 5 mm thick for workshops without lining grinding machines. These linings can be installed immediately after riveting. Not suitable for turned out drum hubs. 5.6 mm thick for workshops with grinding machines. These linings must be ground to the dimension of the processed drum hub/brake drum after riveting.  

Always replace all brake linings on an axle, even if only one lining is oil contaminated, torn or worn.

Clean brake shoes at contact surfaces thoroughly, avoid applying adhesives or similar agents between brake shoes and lining.

Rivet brake linings onto brake shoes. When riveting on brake linings, start at the centre.

Before installing brake shoes, clean brake anchor plate with a soft metal brush and thinly coat brake shoe contact area (arrows) with anti-squeal agent.

Insert parking brake shoe lever in parking brake cable and install brake shoe, retaining pin, pressure spring and pressure spring plate. Attach lower brake shoe spring and install second brake shoe. Note correct brake cable routing (arrow).

If necessary, thinly coat adjustment pinion on threaded part with silicone grease.

Install adjustment unit between brake shoes. Ensure correct installation position (see illus. I, arrow). Then screw unit apart until the drum hub/brake drum still passes freely over the pre-installed brake shoes. When installing new brake shoes, ensure that the belleville spring for the adjustment lever is installed.  

Install adjustment lever with spring on coiled pin (see illus. II). Attach return spring for adjustment lever in brake shoe. Insert bracket for return spring in spring pin and press in bore of brake shoe. Attach upper brake shoe return spring in bracket using commercially available brake spring pliers. Install drum hub/brake drum.

Adjust rear wheel brake and parking brake - see operations "Drum Brake, Adjust" and "Parking Brake, Adjust".
