Parking Brake Cable, Remove and Install  

  Remove, Disconnect   

Press parking brake shoe lever inwards, until cam contacts brake shoe (see illus. I). If necessary, detach parking brake cable from cable compensation yoke.   All Models except Model 71 (Combo)   Remove both rear wheels (only for complete cable replacement). Remove dust caps. Remove split pin (1) from wheel spindle nut. Unscrew wheel spindle nut and remove drum hub.   For Model 71 (Combo)   Detach exhaust system. Remove heat shield from vehicle underbody. Remove hex nut from parking brake cable compensation yoke (see illus. III, arrow).   Detach parking brake cable from brake cable guides at vehicle underbody (see illus. IV).

  Remove, Disconnect   

Detach plastic sleeves from bracket. Bend open parking brake cable sleeves (arrows) on vehicle underbody and on rear springs slightly and detach parking brake cable (see illus. I). Remove detent screws and both brake drums.   Press parking brake shoe lever forwards - in driving direction - and detach parking brake cable (see illus. II). Compress spring of parking brake cable and remove plastic sleeve from brake carrier plate and parking brake cable.     Install, Connect    Insert new parking brake cable in brake anchor plate and attach to parking brake shoes lever (see illus. II). Press together spring of parking brake cable and install plastic sleeve.   Screw the adjustment unit far enough apart to allow brake drum/drum hub to fit freely over pre-installed brake shoes. Install brake drums and fasten with detent screws.     Tighten (Torque)    Brake drum to wheel hub - 4 Nm / 3 lbf. ft.

  Install, Connect   

Insert parking brake cable in brackets (arrow) on vehicle underbody and rear springs.   Attach parking brake cable in brake cable guides on vehicle underbody. Ensure that the right side - black brake cable guide - is installed on top (1).

Install parking brake compensation yoke on parking brake cable with new hex nut (arrow). Install heat shield - 2 Nm / 1.5 lbf. ft. Attach exhaust system. Install rear wheels - 110 Nm / 81 lbf. ft.     Adjust    Adjust parking brake - see operation "Parking Brake, Adjust" in this group.
