Cooling System, Top up and Bleed

Object Number: 616201 Size: DEFAULT  Important!

Only use 19 40 656 (90 297 545) anti-freeze and ensure a concentration of 50% water and 50% anti-freeze. The purpose of anti-freeze is not only to protect the entire cooling system against freezing but also to protect all coolant-affected parts against corrosion and lime deposit. For this reason, even in tropical regions, anti-freeze must be used.

The water quality also plays an important role in addition to the mix ratio. Water of drinkable quality usually meets these requirements. The quality of purified sea water is inadequate.

Damage may also be caused to the engine if unauthorised anti-freeze agent is used.

If radiator, cylinder head or the cylinder head gasket have been replaced the old coolant must not be re-used.

Disconnect wiring harness plug and unscrew coolant temperature sensor (1).

Top up coolant via coolant compensation tank, until it emerges without bubbles from temperature sensor mount bore hole. Install temperature sensor - 10 Nm / 7 lbf. ft., connect wiring harness plug.

Top up coolant to "Kalt" (cold) mark (see illus. II) on coolant compensation tank. Screw closure cap onto coolant compensation tank and allow engine to heat up until coolant thermostat opens (approx. 90 ° C).

Check coolant level. Allow engine to cool - coolant must be at mark "Kalt" (cold), if necessary top up coolant.
