Pressure Loss, Check Engine at operating temperature (oil temperature ≥ 80 ° C/176 ° F).
Remove, Disconnect Disconnect ground cable from battery. Remove closure lid from oil filler opening, closure lid from coolant compensation tank, oil dipstick, air cleaner housing and air intake hose. This allows any compressed air that is blown through to be heard or seen. Remove contact rail from sheathed glow plugs. Remove sheathed glow plugs.

Connect pressure loss tester to compressed air system and calibrate tester - observe manufacturer's instructions. Press rubber plug of dead centre sensor into sheathed glow plug bore. Attach glass cylinder to wing, as vertically as possible. |
Adjust Set piston of cylinder being checked to "TDC". Crank engine slowly in rotational direction by hand. In the compression stroke, the metal piston of the dead centre sensor is pressed upwards. The piston slides down again immediately, even if top dead centre is only exceeded slightly. Top dead centre is determined by turning engine to and fro gently. |
Inspect Screw Connecting Piece KM-649 into sheathed glow plug bore of the cylinder to be tested. Screw KM-533-B onto KM-649 and connect to tester.
Important! If the crankshaft has turned during the checking process, repeat checking. |
Measure Read off pressure loss from tester in percent. Note any audible escaping of compressed air through intake pipe, exhaust or crankcase, or any formation of bubbles in coolant compensation tank. Permissible pressure loss per cylinder approx. 25 %. Permissible pressure difference between individual cylinders approx. 10 %. If compressed air escapes from the pressurised cylinder through the open sheathed glow plug bore of the neighbouring cylinder, the cylinder head gasket is leaky.

Check pressure loss for the 3rd, 4th and 2nd cylinders analogously. Ignition sequence 1-3-4-2.
Install, Connect Close off coolant compensation tank and oil filler opening. Insert oil dipstick. Install sheathed glow plugs - 20 Nm / 15 lbf. ft. - and contact rail. Install air cleaner housing and air intake hose. Connect ground cable to battery. |
