Toothed Belt Tension, Check > < Timing, Check

 

Timing, Adjust  

Notice: 

Adjustment is carried out with the engine cold - at room temperature.  

Object Number: 616191  Size: DEFAULT  Remove, Disconnect   

Disconnect ground cable from battery.  

Remove air cleaner housing - see illustration "Air Ducts (X 14 XE, C 14 SEL, X 16 XE, C 16 SEL)" or "Air Ducts (C 16 XE)".  

Remove upper part of toothed belt cover - see operation "Toothed Belt Cover - Upper Part, Remove and Install".  

For version without AC: remove ribbed V-belt - see operation "Ribbed V-belt, Remove and Install (Vehicles without Power Steering and AC)" or "Ribbed V-belt, Remove and Install (Vehicles with Power Steering)".  

For version with AC: detach ribbed V-belt from alternator pulley and set aside (do not remove) - see operation "Ribbed V-belt, Remove and Install (Vehicles with Power Steering and AC)".  

Remove toothed belt cover - lower part - see operation "Toothed Belt Cover - Lower Part, Remove and Install".  

 

 

Object Number: 616198  Size: DEFAULT  Adjust   

Screw fastening bolt of toothed belt drive gear into crankshaft and turn crankshaft to "1st cylinder TDC" - marks (2) must align with each other.  

Object Number: 616191  Size: DEFAULT  Remove, Disconnect   

Release fastening bolt for toothed belt tension roller and turn adjusting eccentric in direction of arrow (clockwise) until pointer (1) is located just before left stop.  

Remove toothed belt from camshaft pulleys.

When turning the crankshaft, proceed carefully. Improper adjustment leads to contacting and thus to damage of components, e.g. valves on piston.

Set crankshaft (III) or camshafts (I) (shorter travel) to mark. Turn crankshaft slowly and uniformly.  

Marks on the camshaft pulleys must face one another and align with the upper edge of the cylinder head. Lock camshaft pulleys with KM-852 (II).  

Object Number: 616196  Size: DEFAULT  Inspect   

Check installation position of the coolant pump (IV) - if necessary, adjust. Mark (1) on coolant pump must align with mark (2) on cylinder block.

Position toothed belt - ensure that tension side (I) is taut.  

Object Number: 616201  Size: DEFAULT  Important!   

Observe timing marks.  

Object Number: 616198  Size: DEFAULT  Adjust   

Adjust toothed belt tension - see operation "Toothed Belt Tension, Adjust".  

Object Number: 616192  Size: DEFAULT  Install, Connect   

Install toothed belt cover - lower part - see operation "Toothed Belt Cover - Lower Part, Remove and Install".  

Install ribbed V-belt - see operation "Ribbed V-belt, Remove and Install (Vehicles without Power Steering and AC)" or "Ribbed V-belt, Remove and Install (Vehicles with Power Steering)" or "Ribbed V-belt, Remove and Install (Vehicles with Power Steering and AC)".

Object Number: 616192  Size: DEFAULT  Install, Connect   

Install upper part of toothed belt cover - see operation "Toothed Belt Cover - Upper Part, Remove and Install".  

Install air cleaner housing - see illustration "Air Ducts (X 14 XE, C 14 SEL, X 16 XE, C 16 SEL)" or "Air Ducts (C 16 XE)".  

Connect ground cable to battery.
