Cylinder Head Gasket, Check for Leaks (CO 2 - Content in Cooling System) Using Tester MKM-601 and indicator fluid, leaks of the cylinder head gasket or cylinder head can be detected easily. The function of the tester is based on the blue indicator fluid turning to yellow in the reaction vessel, caused by combustion gas entering the coolant circuit. Before performing the leak test, check cooling system for brittle and loose coolant hoses and other damages. Release pressure in cooling system by opening of closure cover on coolant compensation tank.
Remove, Disconnect Position Adapter KM-471 (1) on compensation tank. Insert universal plug (2) from Tool Kit MKM-601 in KM-471 and, by depressing both levers simultaneously, fix the universal plug in the aperture (see illus. I). Attach connection piece (3) to universal plug and connect CO 2 -Tester (4) to adapter (see illus. II). Blow through connection piece and CO 2 -Tester with compressed air before use, in order to prevent incorrect results. |

Install, Connect Unscrew test container from CO 2 -Tester, fill to mark (arrow, see illus. I) with blue reaction fluid and install on CO 2 -Tester.
Inspect Run engine until maximum operating temperature is reached (fan motor switches on). After overpressure has been established in the cooling system, allow gas bubbles to flow through blue indicator fluid for approx. 5 minutes. If yellow discolouring of the indicator fluid should occur, it can be concluded that the cylinder head gasket is defective or that the cylinder head is damaged. Green colouring or paling of the blue colour is insignificant. If there is any doubt concerning the colour of the indicator fluid, the following test may be performed as a check: put a small amount of blue fluid into the test container and breath into it once or twice (CO 2 !). Seal container with hand and shake vigorously. The fluid must turn a definite yellow, otherwise the indicator fluid must be replaced.
Remove, Disconnect Remove CO 2 -Tester (1), connection piece (2), universal plug (3) and adapter (see illus. II) and seal off coolant compensation tank. Flush equipment with water after use. |
