V-Belt Tension, Check and Adjust (Vehicles as of MY '95)
Remove, Disconnect Disconnect ground lead from battery. Remove wiring harness plug from temperature sensor (3) (only C 14 SE). Remove air cleaner housing (1) with air intake hose (2). Remove throttle body on C 14 SE engine - see operation "Throttle Body, Remove and Install". |
|
Unclip octane number plug from bracket (2). Unclip engine wiring harness from wiring trough (1) and retainer (3) and lay aside. |
|
Measure Measure V-belt tension with Tester KM-128-A. Check area as close to the middle between the two pulleys as possible. Press tester lever until the micro switch pin touches the V-belt (see illus.). When the pin touches the V-belt, a buzzing noise can be heard. |
|
Read off the value on the scale and multiply by 100 (10). This value corresponds to the V-belt tension in N (Kp).
Nominal V-belt tension values: |
New |
N (Kp) - 450 (45) |
Run-in |
N (Kp) - 250 to 300 (25 to 30) |
Adjust If nominal V-belt tension values are not reached: Loosen support (1) at alternator and intake manifold. Loosen bolt from alternator shackle (2 + 3). Loosen bolt connection, alternator to alternator bracket (4). Adjust V-belt tension at tensioning bolt (5).

Install, Connect Clip engine wiring harness into wiring harness duct (1) and bracket (3). Push octane number plug into bracket (2). |
|
Install throttle body on C 14 SE engine - see operation "Throttle Body, Remove and Install". Install air cleaner housing (1) and air intake hose (2). Connect temperature sensor wiring harness plug (3), if present. Connect ground cable to battery. |
