Kingpin inclination

Kingpin inclination is the angle (2) produced between the steering axis centre line (1) and a vertical line (4) to the road, transverse to the axis of symmetry.

The kingpin inclination is positive (normal situation) if the steering axis centre line is set inwards towards the top of the vertical line.

The positive kingpin inclination supports the return of the wheels to the straight ahead position after cornering, and prevents wheel "wobble".

Effects of incorrect measurement angles

Kingpin inclination too small:

  • poor steering return
  • susceptibility to tyre faults (conicity, angle effect)
  • can lead to skewing

Kingpin inclination too large:

  • high steering and holding forces

Kingpin inclination different from right to left::

  • susceptibility to skewing
