Fuel System Repair Instructions

Corrugated plastic tubes are used in the ventilation and controlled canister purge system. When these corrugated tubes are replaced, the inserted rubber seals are to be attached to the respective pipes using a lubricant.

Petrol engines:

The fuel system is executed as a non-return fuel system.

This system operates at a fuel pressure of 3.8 bar . Only a short fuel return line from the fuel filter to the fuel tank is installed.

The fuel pressure is applied from the fuel pump in the fuel tank through the fuel line to the fuel manifold pipe and in the fuel return line from the fuel filter to the fuel pressure regulator in the fuel tank. It falls very slowly when the ignition is switched off – a high pressure still exists after 20 minutes.

Important:   Before opening the pressurised section of the fuel system, the fuel pressure must therefore be released at the test connection of the fuel manifold pipe using the Pressure Tester KM-J-34730-91 .

Diesel engines:

Y 17 DT, Y 17 DTL, Z 17 DTH

The injection pump/fuel pump unit is self-ventilating. However, to prevent long periods of dry running, it must be ensured that the fuel filter housing is filled with diesel fuel after the fuel system has been opened.

Z 13 DT, Z 13 DTJ

The high-pressure pump of diesel engine Z 13 DT, Z 13 DTL is self-venting and is additionally supplied by an electric admission pressure pump (in fuel tank).

The Z 13 DT, Z 13 DTJ has a return line/leak oil line for the injectors/fuel distributor pipe leading to a T-piece (on bulkhead). This leads to a separate connection to the fuel housing as well as a connection to the fuel tank.

Note:   The Z 13 DT, Z 13 DTJ diesel engines are fitted with a high-pressure direct injection system. Comply with the safety instructions for the engine, fuel and exhaust system "Repair Instructions, High-Pressure and Direct Injection Systems .

Important:   Long periods of dry running cause damage to the injection pump/fuel pump unit.

Fuel Tank, Drain:

Note:   The fuel tank must be drained with a suitable, commercially-available fuel removal unit and suction hose - follow safety instructions and specific national regulations. The shape and routing of the fuel filler pipe and fuel filler hose make it difficult to insert the suction hose. Use a suitable suction hose with a max. external diameter of 15 mm and coat it thinly with a small quantity of engine oil to reduce the friction in the fuel filler pipe and fuel filler hose. Insert the suction hose into the fuel tank by gently squeezing the fuel filler hose.
