Brake Pads > < Brake Shoes - Drum Brake, Check for Wear

Replace brake linings - rear brake (drum brake)

  Remove

1.   Top up brake fluid reservoir to "MAX" marking and seal with MKM-558-10
2.   Detach gaiter (arrow) from parking brake lever
•   Unclip gaiter
Slide gaiter over parking brake lever
3.   Release parking brake cable
•   Detach protective cap (2)
•   Unscrew nut (1) from parking brake cable

4.   Detach rear wheel
•   Unscrew 4x wheel bolt
Mark position in relation to centre of wheel
5.   Detach protective cap (1) from brake anchor plate

6.   Replate parking brake lever (1)
•   Lever out brake lever (1) with screwdriver (arrow)
Note:   Parking brake lever (1) must protrude over brake shoes so it can be turned back. See diagram (I)
•   Turn back parking brake lever (1) complete (arrow)

7.   Release brake drum (1)
•   Unscrew 2x bolts (2)
•   Remove brake drum
Note:   If brake drum cannot be removed due to excessive wear, proceed as follows.

8.   Remove brake drum (3) with excessive wear
•   Twist 2x long M10 bolts (2), (5) into service bore (1), (6)
•   Screw in M10 bolts alternately until brake drum (3) is detached
Note:   While screwing in the M10 bolts, tap brake drum (3) with plastic mallet (4)
Note:   Always replace brake shoe retaining clips with this procedure.

9.   Detach wheel hub (2)
•   Detach dust cap (1)
•   Unscrew nut (3)
•   Pull off wheel hub (2)

Important:   The springs and retaining clips may not be overstretched or over-deformed, in order guarantee perfect function
10.   Detach lower spring (4)
11.   Detach upper spring (1)
12.   Detach 2x retaining clip (6)
13.   Remove adjustment unit (2)
14.   Remove brake shoes (3), (5)
Note:   Detach parking brake cable at brake shoes (3). See step 17

15.   Detach parking brake cable (2)
Important:   Ensure that the spring (3) is not bent
•   Detach spring (3)
•   Fold up lever (1)
•   Unhitch parking brake cable (2)

16.   Check brake drum for cracks and the contact surface of the brake shoes for grooves - if necessary: precision turn brake drum or replace brake drum.
Note:   In general, both brake drums must be machined or renewed. Only use approved machining equipment. Observe manufacturer's instructions!

  Install

17.   Clean brake anchor plate and coat both sides with anti-squeal compound on both sides of the mating surfaces of the brake shoes in the area of the arrows
18.   Clean drum hub/brake drum
19.   Check wheel brake cylinder (1) for leaks, replace if necessary

20.   Install brake shoes - run-out side
•   Hitch up parking brake cable
•   Attach retaining clip to brake shoes
21.   Install brake shoes - run-in side
•   Attach retaining clip to brake shoes
22.   Attach lower spring
23.   Insert adjusting unit
•   Turn adjustment unit
•   Insert adjusting unit
24.   Attach upper spring
25.   Set prescribed diameter (I)
•   Unscrew adjustment unit (2) on pinion (1) (arrow) until the prescribed diameter has been reached.
Note:   Turn pinion (1) of adjustment unit right side against the direction of the arrow.
  • Diameter on A/Z10XEP L08, Z12XEP L08, A12XEL L08: 202.5 mm - 202.7 mm
  • Diameter on A/Z10XEP L68, Z12XEP L68, A12XEL/XER L68, Z13DTJ, Z13DTH, A/Z13DTE, A13DTC, A13DTR, Z14XEP, A14XEL/XER: 227.7 mm - 227.9 mm

26.   Attach wheel hub
•   Tighten new nuts 280 Nm
27.   Attach brake drum
•   Tighten 2x bolt 7 Nm
28.   Attach dust cap
•   With plastic mallet
29.   Attach cover to brake anchor plate
30.   Attach rear wheel
•   Tighten 4x wheel bolts 110 Nm
31.   Adjust parking brake bite point
•   Press brake pedal hard at least 20 times to build up brake pressure at rear
Note:   The adjustment unit adapts automatically with audible sound.
32.   Parking Brake, Adjust
33.   Clip in parking brake lever gaiter
