Check con-rod bearing clearance (use micrometer and internal measuring device) > < Measure radial run-out

Check con-rod bearing clearance (with plastigage)

  Measure

1.   Remove oil pan
2.   Step 4 to 9: Check con-rod bearing clearance (with plastigage)
3.   Step 10 to 14: Crankshaft Bearing Play, Check (with Plastigage)
4.   Remove con-rod bearing cap
•   Mark installation position (1) of con-rod bearing cap
•   Unscrew 2x bolts
•   Degrease con-rod bearing cap and wet the con-rod bearing clip with engine oil

5.   Lay on Plastigage
Important:   Do not rotate crankshaft.
•   Lay Plastigage (flexible plastic thread) over the entire width of the con-rod bearing journal
Note:   Plastigage is available via the "Opel/Vauxhall Workshop Equipment" catalogue
6.   Install con-rod bearing cap
•   Tighten 2x bolt 35 Nm + 45° + 15°
Note:   To check the con-rod bearing clearance, the screws can be used again.
7.   Remove con-rod bearing cap
•   Unscrew 2x bolts
8.   Measure con-rod bearing clearance
•   Compare width of flattened plastic thread with measuring scale
Note:   Do not confuse millimetre and inch information on measuring scale when reading off value.
•   Permissible con-rod bearing play: 0.019 to 0.071 mm.

9.   Install con-rod bearing cap
Important:   Check markings on parts.
•   Wet con-rod bearing journal and con-rod bearing clips with engine oil
•   Tighten 2x bolt 35 Nm + 45° + 15°
Use new bolts
10.   Remove crankshaft bearing cap
11.   Lay on Plastigage
Important:   Do not rotate crankshaft.
•   Place Plastigage (deformable plastic thread) in position axially over the entire width of the crankshaft bearing journal
Note:   Plastigage is available via the "Opel/Vauxhall Workshop Equipment" catalogue

12.   Attach crankshaft bearing cap
Note:   Note correct tightening sequence.
•   Tighten 2x bolt 50 Nm +45° +15°
Note:   The bolts can be reused for checking crankshaft bearing play.
13.   Remove crankshaft bearing cap
•   Unscrew 2x bolts
14.   Measure crankshaft bearing play
•   Compare width of flattened plastic thread (arrow) with measuring scale
Note:   Do not confuse millimetre and inch information on measuring scale when reading off value.
•   Permissible crankshaft bearing play: 0.005 to 0.059 mm

15.   Install oil pan
