Exhaust Manifold Gasket, Replace

  Remove

1.   Open bonnet
2.   Disconnect battery
•   Undo nut
3.   Remove resonator
4.   Remove mixture regulator oxygen sensor LUREF_1.gif
5.   Remove oil dipstick guide tube LUREF_1.gif
6.   Remove exhaust manifold heat shield
•   Unscrew 2x bolts
7.   Raise vehicle by its full height
Important:   When removing the centre silencer, a catalytic converter, an exhaust manifold or an exhaust manifold with catalytic converter, the exhaust system piece remaining in the vehicle must be secured against uncontrolled sagging. Bends in the flex pipe by as little as 5 - 10 angle degrees or a twist through +/- 0.5 ° from the specified installation position can lead to damage with subsequent complete failure of the flex pipe. The exhaust system fastening clamps must be replaced every time they are removed.
When replacing the exhaust system, the transport fixing must first be removed after installation and before commissioning. This should be stored for other work in which the exhaust system must be removed and used to secure the flex pipe.
8.   Attach transport fixing to flex pipe
Note:   The installation instruction (1) on the transport fixing must be observed.

9.   Detach front exhaust pipe (2) from catalytic converter
•   Unscrew 3x nuts (1)

10.   Detach exhaust manifold bracket with catalytic converter
•   Unscrew 4x bolts
11.   Lower vehicle by its full height
12.   Remove exhaust manifold with catalytic converter
•   Unscrew 7 nuts
•   Remove seal

  Install

13.   Clean sealing surface
14.   Install exhaust manifold with catalytic converter
•   Install new gasket
•   Tighten 7x nut
– Tightening torque 15 Nm .
Note:   Use new nuts.
15.   Raise vehicle by its full height
16.   Attach exhaust manifold bracket with catalytic converter
•   Tighten 4x bolts
– Tightening torque 22 Nm .
17.   Attach front exhaust pipe from catalytic converter
•   Tighten 3x nuts
– Tightening torque 20 Nm .
18.   Detach transport locating from flex pipe
19.   Lower vehicle by its full height
20.   Attach exhaust manifold heat shield
•   Tighten 2x bolts
– Tightening torque 8 Nm .
21.   Install oil dipstick guide tube LUREF_1.gif
22.   Install oxygen sensor mixture regulator LUREF_1.gif
23.   Connect battery
•   Tighten nut
– Tightening torque 5 Nm .
24.   Program volatile memories
25.   Close bonnet
