Cylinder Head/Cylinder Block Contact Surfaces, Check for Plane Surface

Cylinder Head

Remove cylinder head.

See operation "Cylinder Head, Remove and Install".

Disassemble cylinder head.

See operation "Cylinder Head, Disassemble and Assemble".

Check cylinder block contact surfaces with straightedge and feeler gauge along all four sides and both diagonals for twisting and warping.

Permissible tolerance: 0.10 mm/0.004 in.

If the measured values are over the permissible tolerance, grind the cylinder head.

Cylinder head height must not be below minimum

Cylinder head height:      131.451 - 31.55 mm/

                                              5.17 - 5.18 in.

Cylinder head height:       min. 131.25 mm/

                                                  5.167 in.

Important

On a reground cylinder head the valve and swirl chamber recess must be checked.

See operation "Cylinder Head, Disassemble and Assemble".

Check manifold mounting surfaces with straightedge and feeler gauge for twisting and warping.

Permissible tolerance: 0.20 mm/0.79 in.

If measured values are over the permissible tolerance, regrind mounting surfaces.

Minimum width of cylinder head must not be exceeded

Reference value (intake side):

151.90 - 152.10 mm/5.98 - 5.99 in.

Minimum value (intake side):

min. 151.10 mm/5.96 in.

Reference value (exhaust side):

10.90 - 11. 10 mm/0.43 - 0.44 in.

Minimum value (exhaust side):

min. 10.50 mm/0.41 in.

The measurements should be made from the centre of the working borings to the mounting surface in each case (see illus. C 7056).

Intake and Exhaust Manifold

Measure intake and exhaust manifold mounting surfaces with straightedge and feeler gauge.

Permissible tolerance: 0.40 mm/0.02 in.

If the measured values are over the prescribed tolerance, the manifold in question must be replaced.

Cylinder Block

Pull positioning sleeve out of cylinder block.

Check cylinder block mounting surface with straightedge and feeler gauge along the four sides and both diagonals for twisting and warping.

Permissible tolerance: 0.10 mm/0.004 in.

After measuring the cylinder block, reinstall positioning sleeve.
