Bearing Play, Cheek

Bearing play is measured using "Plastigage". "Plastigage" consists of mailable plastic thread with a precisely calibrated diameter.

The thread is sectioned along width of bearing and laid axially between crankshaft journal and bearing shell (arrow).

By then tightening bearing cover screws - observe prescribed torque - the thread is moulded to a specific width according to the size of the bearing play present.

Important:

To avoid tearing thread, when removing bearing cover, remove grease from crankshaft journal and oil bearing

shell lightly.

After removing bearing cover, the width of the compressed thread (arrow) sticking to journal or bearing shell can be measured using supplied measuring gauge.

Do not confuse inch and millimeter scales.

Using this method, the cone or oval shaping can be quickly and safely determined.

"Plastigage" is for different ranges of tolerance.

Permissible tolerances: see Technical Data.

Each original packet of "Plastigage" contains 12 sleeves, each with a measuring thread, sufficient for approx. 150 individual measurements.

All measurements and permissible clearances are to be found in "Technical Data".
