Starter Ring Gear, Replace

 

For clearer representation, this operation is described on a removed engine.

 

Remove flywheel, see corresponding operation.

 

To facilitate separation, centre punch starter gear below one tooth gap and drill to a depth of 8 mm/ 0.31 in. using an approx. 6 mm/ 0.24 in. Æ drill.

Clamp flywheel in vice with protective jaws and separate ring gear at drill hole using sharp chisel.

Heat new starter ring gear evenly to approx. 180 - 230° C/ 356 - 446 °F (straw yellow colour) and - with inner chamfered edge facing flywheel - drive on evenly up to stop using brass drift.

 

Install flywheel.

Lateral run-out of starter gear ring (with flywheel screwed to crankshaft) must not exceed 0.5 mm/ 0.019 in.

Check using dial gauge.
