Camshaft and Rocker Arm, Replace (Camshaft Housing Installed)

Turn crankshaft in rotation direction of engine (clockwise) and bring all pistons to central position - 900 before TDC.

Loosen toothed belt and remove.

See operation "Toothed Belt, Replace".

Remove camshaft housing cover.

Detach camshaft timing gear.

For this counterhold at camshaft with open-ended spanner.

Remove ignition distributor - see corresponding operation.

C 16 SE:

Remove twin spark ignition coil - see corresponding operation.

Carburettor engines:

Remove fastening bolts (arrows) from fuel pump.

Attach commercially available valve compressor and press down all rocker arms uniformly.

Observe manufacturer's instructions.

Remove coolant compensation tank and lay aside (system remains closed).

Remove thrust plate from camshaft housing.

Pull camshaft out of housing.

Release tension in valve compressor and remove.

Remove rocker arms and pushers.

Clean parts, inspect visually, if necessary replace.

Important:

When replacing camshaft, always replace all rocker arms.

Before installing camshaft and rocker arms, coat sliding surfaces with MOS₂ Lubricating Paste.

Insert pushers and rocker arms and tension with valve compressor.

Carefully insert camshaft in camshaft housing.

Release tension in valve compressor and remove.

Install thrust plate.

Install ignition distributor or dual spark ignition distributor - see corresponding operations.

Tightening torque:

Thrust plate to camshaft housing - 8 Nm/6 lbf. ft.

Install camshaft sprocket (timing mark points forwards) and turn to timing mark (1st cylinder in TDC position).

When installing camshaft sprocket, counterhold at camshaft with flat spanner.

Install camshaft housing cover and fuel pump with new gasket.

Tightening torque:

camshaft sprocket to camshaft - 45 Nm/33 lbf. ft. camshaft housing cover to housing - 8 Nm/6 lbf. ft. fuel pump to camshaft housing - 18 Nm/13 lbf. ft.
