Toothed Belt Tension, Check and Adjust

(Engines without toothed belt tensioner)

Checking the used toothed belt takes place with the engine at operating temperature (oil temperature > 80 °C/ 176 °F).

A new toothed belt should be installed and adjusted on a cold engine.

Check:

Measure toothed belt tension using Gauge KM - 510 - A.

C 14 SE, C 16 SE, E 16 SE and C 16 SEI:

Remove air cleaner and air intake hose.

Remove front toothed belt cover.

Tension toothed belt tensioned side.

To do this, turn crankshaft in direction of engine rotation (clockwise) at least 90°, until camshaft sprocket and crankshaft pulley stand on marking.

For position of valve timing markings - see operation

"Valve timing, Check and Adjust".

Install locked gauge on slack side between water pump gear and camshaft sprocket and slowly release.

The toothed belt must pass between points I, II and III.

Tensioning hook III must engage in a tooth gap.

Friction in the gauge is almost completely eliminated by lightly tapping with finger tips.

Read off toothed belt tension from gauge.

If value deviates, correct toothed belt tension.

Adjust:

Adjust tension of toothed belt by turning water pump housing in cylinder block. Loosen pump fastening bolts.

Install Adjusting Wrench KM - 421 - A.

Turn pump with gauge in position.

Lever upwards to increase tension.

Lever downwards to decrease tension.

Slightly tighten water pump fastening bolts.

Remove gauge and turn crankshaft one full turn in rotational direction of engine.

Install gauge again and read off test value.

Important:

Toothed belt tension must be adjusted until a stable value is attained.

Tighten water pump fastening bolts.

Torque:

Water pump to cylinder block (M 6) - 8 Nm/6 lbf. ft.

Install front toothed belt cover.

If removed:

Install air cleaner and air intake hose.
