Adjustment Instructions for Tapered Roller Bearings in Differential - (Transmission Housing with Transmission and Differential Removed)

a)    New Bearings

When replacing the tapered roller bearings, they are to be preloaded by screwing in the bearing ring so that a slip torque of 150 to 210 Ncm/13 to 18 lbf. in. is measured at a rotational speed of 1 revolution per second.

To measure slip torque, use Special Service Tool KM-455, inserted in the differential housing in conjunction with Torsiometer KM - 536.

b)    As Reinstalled Parts (Bearing Already Run)

When replacing the bearing rings, differential housing or transmission housing, using Device KM - 455 in conjunction with Torsiometer MKM-536, a slip torque of 60 to 100 Ncm/ 5 to 9 lbf. in. should be maintained.

c)   Restoring adjustment using marking (without axial play)

When reusing previously removed parts, such as tapered roller bearings, bearing ring, differential housing and transmission housing, the tapered roller bearings are preloaded by screwing in the bearing ring to the same position as before removal (marking).

      (With axial play)

If axial play in the tapered roller bearings was determined during removal of the differential, maintain slip torque of 60 to 100 Ncm/5 to 9 lbf. in.

d)    New bearings

When replacing the tapered roller bearings, they should be preloaded by screwing in the bearing ring until a slip torque of 150 to 210 Ncm/13 to 18 lbf. in. is measured at a rotational speed of 1 revolution per second.

To do so, the end shield with transmission gear should be removed from the transmission housing beforehand.

e)    As reinstalled parts (bearings already run)

When replacing the bearing ring, differential case, or transmission housing, the total slip torque (with transmission gear set) is to be measured first of all (bearing ring position), then add 80 Ncm/7 lbf. in. to the measured torque when making the adjustment.

f)     Restoring adjustment using marking (without axial play)

When reusing previously removed parts such as tapered roller bearings, bearing ring, differential housing and transmission housing, the tapered roller bearings should be preloaded by screwing in the bearing ring to the same position as before removal (marking).

      (With axial play)

If axial play was determined in the tapered roller bearings during removal of the differential, the overall slip torque should be measured first (with transmission gear set), and then adjusted to the measured torque plus an additional 80 Ncm/7 lbf. in.

Secure bearing ring by screwing on the locking plate.

Insert the corresponding plugs into the bearing ring and transmission housing.

Bolt differential cover to the transmission housing - 30 Nm/23 lbf. ft. for the metal version, 18 Nm/13 lbf. ft. for the light alloy version.

Stick seal to cover with antifriction bearing grease.
