Shift Linkage, Adjust
Put gearshift lever into neutral position (not engaged in
any gear).
Unscrew console - if installed - from transmission tunnel
and remove.
up to MY '91:
Lever out covers and unscrew fastening bolts underneath
(arrows).
As of MY '91
Changed console with only one fastening bolt

Loosen bolt (arrow) for mounting of guide lever clamp.
Up to MY '93:
Clamp is located on shift tube (arrow).
As of MY '93:
Clamp is located on shift linkage lever.

Remove plug (arrow) from adjustment hole in cover.
|
|
Adjust shift linkage.
Turn shift rod (1) to the left or pull selector rod to the left
(viewed in direction of travel), until KM - 527 or KM - 527 - A (2)
can be inserted up to stop in adjustment hole.
If KM - 527 is used, grind off approx.
3 mm/0.12 in. of chamfer on short leg. KM - 527 - A
has been modified.

With bellows turned up, simultaneously put gearshift lever
at 1st and 2nd gear level (2nd mechanic).
In the process, the hook of the shift lever must fit against
the stop shoulder (1) without any play.
The front edge (2) of the gearshift lever hook must lie
inside the marked notch in the transmission tunnel cutout (arrow).
Tighten guide lever clamp in this position of shift rod and
shift lever - 14 Nm/10 lbf. ft. and then a further 90 to 180 °.
Remove KM - 527 or
KM - 527 - A and insert plug into hole.
Use new plug.

For installed 5-speed transmission then check "Fine
adjustment for 5th gear". To do this, place Tool
KM - 562 (1) on shift lever - transmission in neutral (no gear
engaged).
KM - 562 (1) must be almost free of play
(max. 0.4 mm/.016 in. in play) on left stop shoulder (2) - arrow
pointing forwards.

If this is not the case, carry out a fine adjustment
for 5th gear.
Turn up 2 flaps of locking plate (2). Turn adjusting nut (3) of
detent pin so far until KM - 562 (1) is nearly flush with left
stop shoulder.
Secure adjusting nut (3) by turning up 2 flaps of locking plate
(2).

Mount shift lever bellows on tunnel cutout.
Push bellows up to stop on lever tube. High side of bellows or
arrow is to the front (arrow).
Fasten console - if installed - to the transmission tunnel.
Note:
All gears must be easy to engage with the vehicle
stationary, the engine running and the clutch released.
