Speedometer Helical Gear (Driving), Replace
The following operations are to be executed with the transmission
in place.
See "Manual Transmission and Differential,
Overhaul" for additional information.
Remove
Raise vehicle. Remove both front wheels.
Unbolt differential cover from transmission housing
(transmission fluid will drain out).
Unbolt swivel joint on both sides from steering knuckle.
|
|
Drive both drive shafts out of transmission housing using
KM - 460 - 2 - A (left side, modified tool)
and KM - 460 - 1 (right side).
Important:
The chamfered side of the tool must always face the
transmission.
Mark bearing ring position on ring and on transmission
housing. Check axial play of tapered roller bearing.
Unscrew bearing ring from transmission housing using
KM - 447, unbolt bearing flange and remove differential.
Clamp differential housing in vice using KM-458-A.
Knock speedometer helical gear (driving) from differential
housing (destroy).
Install
Use KM - 459 to press new speedometer gear onto
differential housing until it snaps in place.
Important:
Preheat gear and KM-459 in water bath to 80 °C/176 °F.
Insert differential into transmission housing.
Use KM - 447 to screw ring bearing into
transmission housing.
When doing so, observe the adjustment procedures for the
differential tapered roller bearings under Section
Bolt differential cover to transmission housing -
30 Nm/22 lbf. ft. (sheet metal version), 18 Nm/13 lbf. ft. (light
alloy version).
First, press both drive shafts into transmission housing.
Then use screwdriver to drive them In until the retaining ring snaps into
place.
First place new retaining ring in axle shaft.
Important:
Do not overstress retaining ring. Apply screwdriver to friction
weld joint, not on sheet metal panelling.
After retaining ring is locked into position, check for secure
seating of the axle shaft by pulling by hand on the outer joint diameter.
Important:
Seating of the axle shaft cannot be checked by pulling on the
shaft.
Fasten swivel joint with bolt and nut to steering knuckle -
important mounting part - 30 Nm/22 lbf. ft.
Tighten wheel bolts alternating crosswise - 110 Nm/81
lbf. ft.
Fill transmission fluid.
