Production Solution:
Remedy: Important: In countries where return of warranty parts is mandatory, replaced drive units must be sent back in their original packaging with transport protection.
Remedy for following malfunctions of sun roof: - Suddenly sun roof can only be operated by pressing rotary knob, despite being correctly programmed. - Sun roof cannot be closed via "convenience closing" (closing sun roof from outside) function in vehicles with diesel engines. - Sun roof closes but then moves back slightly. - Sun roof does not close completely from open position. - Sun roof stops at heavy braking when closing from open position. - Vehicle with X25XE, X30XE and diesel engines: Sun roof no longer closes when "convenience closing" is interrupted and then repeated. - Sun roof cannot be operated after entering the vehicle. - Preselector switch Rotary knob illumination defective ( bulb cannot be replaced). In vehicles with electric window winders and electric sun roof, these components can be centrally closed when the vehicle is locked: Hold key in lock position until the windows and sunroof are closed.
Vehicles with infrared remote control: Press centre button on remote control until all components are closed (Make sure that key is pointed towards receiver).
Programming sun roof control unit: After the battery has been disconnected or the drive unit (motor, gear an control unit for sunroof) has been replaced, the control unit must be reprogrammed with the following steps:
"0" position recognition: Press rotary knob until roof is at a standstil: closed position of sliding roof will be recogniced from control unit.The position of the rotary knob is not significant.
Torque recognition: Move sunroof three times from ventilation position to open position (rotary knob pressed):the control unit" learns" the friction values of the sunroof mechanism in stages, so that it can activate the pinch guard if this friction increases.
Important: When installing and removing the drive unit for the electronically controlled sunroof, note:
1. Close sunroof electrically or using emergency actuation. Before reinstalling the drive unit, ensure that the drive unit is in the "O" position(while removed, connect electrically and press rotary knob until motor stops) and that the sunroof is in the mechanical"O" position (left and right marks an slide block must aligen)

If the drive unit is being replaced, use the enclosed assembly adapter (1), for fastening the switch to the panelling). Assembly adapter is attached to the shaft for the rotary knob (2) when the drive unit is supplied. Push adapter onto shaft (2) and fasten on shaft(2) by moving black ring of.
Caution: The drive unit, used in this Field Remedy Instriction, is named motor in the microfish for parts. The composition drive unit contains motor, gear, switch and control unit. As replacements for drive unit use Cat. /Part No.12 07 048 / 90 459 138) As of CW 16 / 95 A modified drive unit is used for production: Mark on motor: TDBC8WB /E5 or greater. This drive unit includes all modifications needed for remedy of the folling complaints.
The drive unit must be replaced competely.
Complaint: Sunroof can only be operated by pressing rotary knob, despite being correctly programmed.
Cause: Inadequate ground connection to battery. Battery ground interruptions cause the sunroof control unit programming to be lost.
Remedy: After service with disconnected battery and before programming the control unit, ensure that the battery negative terminal is correctly connected to ground.
Complaint: Sunroof cannot be closed via "convenience closing" function in vehicles with diesel engines.
Cause: Drive unit for vehicles with petrol engines is installed. The sun roof requires a speed signal. When the ignition is switched off, the diesel engine control unit influences the speed signal and prevents convenience closing function. The sunroof cannot be closed with the central locking or remote control when the vehicle is left.
Remedy: Replace drive unit
Complaint: Sunroof opens by self-operation; respectively closes but then moves back slightly, or can only be closed by pressing the rotary knob (overriding pinch guard).
Cause: The ECU of the sunroof stops the sunroof closing when a higher force is needed and the sunroof moves back slightly to prevent damage to jammed objects. If this happens without anything visibly jammed, the ECU of the sunroof can be matched to the new force of sunroof mechanism by pressing the rotary knob. The pinch guard can be triggered by various external faults: - sunroof stiff - basic adjustment of sunroof mechanism asymmetric - drive unit of sunroof not programmed completely, e.g. after disconnecting battery.
Remedy: Eliminate stiffness. Ensure that sunroof basic mechanical adjustment is correct. Program sunroof, as described above.
Complaint: Sun roof does not close completely from open (sliding) position.
Cause: Under certain circumstances (frequent use of convenience closing function), the odometer of the sun roof control unit has incorrect information about the sunroof position. That leaves the sun roof slightly open.
Remedy: Ensure that sun roof mechanism is in "0" position. Turn rotary knob of sun roof to position "tilt". Before tilting, the sun roof moves to the "0" position. When moving past the "0" postion, the sun roof control unit always synchronizes the information about the sunroof position.
Complaint: Sunroof opens by self-operation, especially at high air humidity and cold ambient temperatures.
Cause: Electronic fault caused by humidity in the drive unit.
Remedy: Replace drive unit.
Complaint: Sunroof stops at heavy braking when closing from open (sliding) position.
Cause: When braking, the force for moving the sun roof position changes. This force deviate from the stored value of the control unit and can trigger the pinch guard.
Remedy: The customer should be informed accordingly. Press rotary knob and hold the knob 2 sec. longer until sunroof motor stopps. If the function of the sunroof is still not okay, proceed with torque recognition under item programming sunroof control unit.
Complaint: Vehicles with X25XE, X30XE and diesel engines: Sun roof no longer closes when the "convenience closing" function is interrupted (e.g. holding the key outside the range of the receiver).
Cause: The control unit for the X25XE, X30XE and diesel engines influence the drive unit control unit in such a way that the "convenience closing" function can only be performed once without interruption after leaving the vehicle.
Remedy: Replace drive unit.
Complaint: Sun roof cannot be operated after entering the vehicle.
Cause: Sunroof control unit processor goes in "sleep mode".
Remedy: Disconnect the battery, the sun roof control unit will be resetted (the control unit must be programmed after this).
Complaint: Rotary knob illumination defective.
Cause /Product Resolve: As of CW 30 1994, the bulb in the drive unit can be replaced.
Remedy: Drive units from before this production date can only be replaced completely.
