Cooling System, Top Up and Bleed

Caution

Only use Anti-freeze 19 40 656 (90 297 545) and ensure a concentration of 50% water and 50% anti-freeze. The anti-freeze does not only protect the entire cooling system from freezing, it also protects all the components that the coolant has washed over from rusting/calcium formation. Therefore, even in tropical countries the anti-freeze agent must always be added.

The water quality also plays an important role in addition to the mix ratio. Water of drinkable quality usually meets these requirements. The quality of purified sea water is inadequate!

Damage may also be caused to the engine if unauthorised anti-freeze agent is used.

If radiator, cylinder head or cylinder head seal have been replaced the old coolant must not be re-used.

  Inspect

Add coolant up to "COLD" (1) marking on coolant compensation tank.

After closing the cooling system, allow engine to warm up until thermostat opens (coolant temperature approx. 80 °C).

Cooling system bleeds automatically during engine warm-up phase.

Allow engine to cool down and check coolant, topping up coolant to "COLD" marking on coolant compensation tank if necessary.
