Caution
Do not damage the nozzle (plastic, breakable).
Remove
Remove pressure line (2) and return line (1) from steering
gear.
Unbolt footwell panelling and ventilation duct. Remove clamp
bolts (1 + 2) from disc joint, widen disc joint clamp pieces
carefully and push onto steering shaft as far as possible. Install
engine lifter – see operation "Engine Damping Blocks, Remove
and Install" in group "J". Raise engine approx. 2 – 3 cm/0.8
– 1.2 in.
Raise vehicle. Remove starter – see operation "Starter,
Remove and Install" in group "J". Unfasten fastening screws (1-4)
from steering gear. Remove steering box from below.
For Replacement of Steering Gear (Vehicles up to
MY '96):
Due to a change to the steering gear from MY '96, the following
operations are to be carried out prior to installation:
After removal of steering gear, the seal (1) at the bulkhead
must be removed – this operation must be carried out with
great care, as it may otherwise lead to the ingress of water and
passenger compartment noise in the area of the bulkhead.
Prior to installation of steering gear, the new bulkhead seal
(2) is to be aligned with the designation "OBEN" on the
identification plate and pushed onto the steering gear.
Install
Insert steering gear from below and insert as far as possible
into disc joint.
Connect fastening bolts (1-4) for steering gear in the following
sequence and tighten: 1-4-3 – tightening torque 55 Nm / 40.5
lbf. ft. Insert fork-shaped spacer ring between wheel well and
steering gear. Connect fastening bolt (2) and tighten –
tightening torque 55 Nm / 40.5 lbf. ft.
Install starter – see operation "Starter, Remove and
Install" in group "J". Connect wiring harness plug for
electro-hydraulic converter. Lower vehicle.

Clamp bolt (2) to steering gear – 22 Nm / 16 lbf. ft.
Clamp bolt (1) to steering shaft – 22 Nm / 16 lbf. ft.
Install
Install ventilation duct and footwell panelling. Unlock steering
and ignition lock.
Remove
Lower engine. Remove engine lifter.
Install
Connect vacuum hose for solenoid valve. Bolt coolant reservoir
on. Replace O-ring (1) for pressure and return line. Slightly cut
seal in the bulkhead in the area of the pressure and return
line.
