General Information on Checking

To ensure certain and accurate diagnosis, observe the following sequence when checking with TECH 1:

F2:TROUBLE CODE

The control unit of each electronic system monitors the system for incorrect performance. If a fault is recognised, the control unit stores a trouble code which can be shown on the TECH 1 display with the function F2:TROUBLE CODE.

Stored trouble codes can only be deleted using TECH 1.

F0:DATA LIST

The function F0:DATA LIST allows the current conditions of the monitored signals to be read out. The values displayed by TECH 1 can be compared with the nominal values in the F0:DATA LIST table.

If the actual values deviate from the nominal values, the table provides instructions on elimination of the fault.

If TECH 1 displays the message "NOT USED", the displayed parameter is not evaluated by the system.

When the "ENTER" key is pressed, the number of the current test step is shown at the top right corner of the display.

F5:ACTUATOR TEST

Using the actuator test, the actuators of the tested system are actuated by TECH 1 and subjected to a function check.

During the actuator test, the control unit of the system being tested is set various parameters by TECH 1. For this reason, always reinitialise the system by switching the ignition off and on again after completion of the actuator test.

F3:SNAPSHOT

The snapshot function should be used if the preceding measures did not reveal a malfunction, although a complaint was made by the customer.

For snapshots, recreate the circumstances which, according to the customer, led to the occurrence of the fault.

The snapshot function can also be used for localisation of loose contacts or sporadic faults.

F6:ADJUSTMENTS

TECH 1 can be used to set adjustments to the vehicle system.

In the TID, the time and date can be set using TECH 1.

F4:CLEAR CODES

This program module function is used to delete the trouble codes stored in the control unit.

F7:PROGRAMMING (for MID)

Selection of a certain program code adapts the MID to the relevant vehicle (engine, engine management system). 7 different languages for the text and 4 different systems of units for the variables on the display can be selected.

The MID can also be programmed for operation with or without radio.

Final System Check

After completing repairs, the system should be subjected to a final check. Observe the following procedure:

·   Switch ignition off and on again (system is reinitialised)

·   Delete trouble codes (F4:CLEAR CODES)

·   Switch ignition off and on again (system is reinitialised)

·   Read out trouble codes (there must be no trouble codes)

·   Check data list parameters (F0:DATA LIST)

·   Recreate driving situation in which, according to the customer, the fault occurred. (the complaint must not reoccur)

Note:

The TID contains a telltale for automatic transmission faults, which must illuminate when the ignition is switched ON. Its function is not evaluated during the TECH 1 check. If this telltale illuminates during operation, the automatic transmission system must be subjected to a check.
