Spray Seam Sealing for Body Repairs

Vehicles:

All

General:

This Technical Information Bulletin describes a new system for working with universally applicable Spray Seam Sealing (SSS) for body repairs. This system is a useful, economical addition to the existing sealing methods.

The SSS has the following performance characteristics:

·     Appearance of repaired seams corresponds to production seals.

·     Good adhesion on metal, primed surfaces and colour coats

·     Does not contain isocyanate, silicon and polyvinyl chloride (PVC)

·     Fast drying, age - resistant, noise - insulating, wear - resistant

·     Increased corrosion protection

·     Resistant to ultraviolet light

·     Good for top - coating

General Description

The SSS is a sealing paste containing solvents based on polyether, with reacts with humidity to cross - link into a permanently elastic, wear - resistant product.

The curing times are dependent on the air humidity, temperature and thickness of layer.

The system consists of the Sealing Material 90 543 279 / 15 03 176, available in cartridges (310 mm) with the corresponding replacement nozzles. It is processed using the Telescopic Pistol MKM - 950.

It is also possible to use the Telescopic Pistol MKM - 950 to process conventional 310 ml cartridges. A special union nut is enclosed for this purpose (multi - functional use).

Applications

The SSS can be used in body repair for sealing welding seams, edges, folds and for surface application in the areas specified in sections 2. 1 to 2. 6.

The telescopic pistol can be used to produce various seam shapes, allowing the sealing seams used in production to be reproduced.

Limitations

A    Always apply SSS to primed surfaces.

       Important:

Loss of adhesion will result if SSS is applied to surfaces treated with spot weld paint, zinc dust paint and zinc spray.

B    Only apply SSS to hardened materials (sealing materials, adhesive).

The following Service literature is available:

·     This Technical Information Bulletin about the Spray Seam Sealing System

·     The new system will be included in revised editions of Service Instructions and Corrosion Protection brochures.

A2  Safety Measures

In general, the user must always be protected against hazards and stress. The onus of responsibility lies with the employer or superior to ensure that work can be performed without risk. National legislation, guidelines and regulations on labour safety must be observed, such as:

·     Accident prevention regulations and guidelines from the authorities of legal work associations

·     Ordinances about flammable fluids

·     Workplace ordinances

·     Workshop guidelines

·     Materials ordinances

These regulations may vary from country to country.

Process SSS in closed, well - ventilated workrooms only.

Step A Service Literature

A2          Safety Measures

Chemicals can affect the human body via swallowing, skin contact or via the respiratory organs.

The following basic principles must always be observed:

To protect the eyes

·     Wear protective goggles.

·     If SSS gets into the eyes, rinse with plenty of water.

To protect the respiratory organs

·     Use SSS in well ventilated rooms or use an air extract system..

·     Use respiratory equipment.

To protect the skin

·     Wear protective clothing and gloves.

·     If SSS comes into contact with skin, wash with plenty of water and soap.

·     Wear a head covering.

Step A Service Literature

A2          Safety Measures

·     Check that the telescopic pistol union nut is firmly seated.

·     Uncouple the air line before changing the cartridge.

·     Use only undamaged cartridges.

·     Do not point the telescopic pistol at people.
