Steering Wheel, Remove and Install (Vehicles with Airbag and 4-Spoke Steering Wheel as of MY '98) > < Recommended Torque Values - Group C

 

"Remove and install contact unit (vehicles as of MY '98)".

Steering wheel - see operation "Steering Wheel, Remove and Install" in group "M".  

Remove signal switch panelling (1). Unscrew retaining lever in vehicles with height adjustable steering column.  

Using small screwdriver, press off lock (2) of the wiring harness plug (3) and remove wiring harness plug.  

Carefully loosen the four clips (4) of the contact unit and remove contact unit.

Do not loosen detent (6) and steering lock until re-installation.

Determine centre position - only required if detent (6) and/or steering lock was erroneously triggered. Only possible with removed contact unit.  

Pressing detent (6), carefully turn inner part of contact unit anti-clockwise until required force noticeably increases (torque increase). Then turn back approx. 2.5 revolutions, then again in original direction until arrows (7) coincide.

When installing a new contact unit, remove transport lock (5).  

Notice: 

 

New contact units always have the centre position (7).

Place contact unit with both guide pins (1) at signal switch housing and press on uniformly and parallel (I) until 4 clips (2) catch. Contact unit must not be attached tilted (II).  

Check correct seating of clips. Clips must not be damaged.  

Attach wiring harness plug (3) to bushing (4) of contact unit and without using force pull wiring harness plug onto the bushing by pressing in the slider (5).  

Install signal switch panelling.  

For vehicles with right-hand drive: adjust airbag contact unit using KM-988 - see operation "Steering Wheel, Remove and Install (Vehicles with Airbag as of MY '98)" in group "M".  

Align steering wheel if necessary with KM-989 and install - see operation "Steering Wheel, Remove and Install" in group "M".
