Brief Checking Procedures for Auxiliary Heaters Not Capable of Diagnosis

Vehicles:

Vectra - B with X 20 DTL engine (as of MY `97)

Condition:

An auxiliary heater is available as optional equipment in conjunction with the X 20 DTL engine (as of MY `97.5 with self - diagnosis). Systems not capable of self - diagnosis are identified by a yellow mark. As of chassis no. 36V1 10491 1, the auxiliary heater is fastened by two screws instead of just one at the rear of the bracket.

Remedy:

This Technical Information Bulletin includes the block diagram, a function description and an electronic function check with brief checking procedures. Trouble - shooting for the module with self - diagnosis shall be described in appropriate Checking Procedures when `. he system is introduced.

Block Diagram:

61   Alternator G2, terminal 61 (alternator running)

31   Terminal 31, ground

30   Terminal 30, battery positive

15   Terminal 15, ignition ON

E42        Auxiliary heater (coolant heating)

S69        Heating intake air temperature switch

M69       Dosing pump (fuel dosing pump)

X13        Diagnostic plug, 16 - pin (in system without self - diagnosis, not connected in wiring harness)

Note:      The digits within E42 indicate the connections of the 8 - pin auxiliary heater plug.

Function:

The auxiliary heater is based on the fuel - fired parking heating system. It is connected to the heating circuit and serves to accelerate heating of the coolant at low ambient temperatures. In the event of extreme cold, the interior warms up more quickly, ensuring that the windscreen area defrosts more rapidly.

Object Number: 2397487 Size: DEFAULT

Test Conditions:

·     Coolant temperature lower than 75 °C / 167 °F (measured inside the auxiliary heater)

·     Ambient temperature lower than 5 °C / 41 °F (if ambient temperature is higher than 5 °C / 41 °F, the temperature switch must be bridged or brought down to below 5 °C / 41 °F with cold spray)

·     Exhaust suction equipment required

Function Check:

·     Inspect electric cable connection.

·     Ignition ON, start engine:

Auxiliary heater attempts to start within 270 sec., dosing pump pulses after 45 seconds, manual test is possible.

·     If auxiliary heater does not activate, ignition OFF and ON again:

The auxiliary heater makes a further two attempts to start automatically.

·     The function of the auxiliary heater cannot be tested when the coolant temperature is higher than 75 °C / 167 °F.
