Slip Coupling

The Vectra-B has a lock sleeve (1) which rotates freely due to its bearing on tolerance sleeves (2). This protects the steering lock from forced breakage and unauthorised use of the vehicle by locking the steering. Illus. F 5181 shows the locations of the tolerance sleeves on the steering shaft.

13.2.1   Slip Coupling (continued)

When the steering lock is engaged, the tolerance sleeves (illus. F 5181, 2) allow the lock sleeve (illus. F 5181, 1) to slip through at torques above 200 Nm/147.5 lbf. ft. The lock cylinder then rotates freely, making it impossible to shear off the lock pin and thus release the steering.

The amount of torque required is however too large to allow the vehicle to be operated.
