MIL is ON, Multiple "Short to Ground" Diagnostic Trouble Codes are Stored

Model(s):
Cabrio 2001 to 2002 (see VIN below)

Condition

Malfunction Indicator Light (MIL) ON, multiple short to ground Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTC's) are stored.

May be caused by a voltage spike from the door contact switch which triggers the fuel pump relay circuit.

Production

Improved fuel pump relay installed beginning VIN: 3VWDC21V72M803142.

Service

-

Connect the VAS 5051 Diagnostic tool (see VESIS).

-

Check for multiple DTC's which relate to a "short to ground" such as P1225 - P1228, P1451, P1472 etc. (see VESIS).

Remove, inspect and clean Battery Ground (GND) terminals at battery tray and transmission.

WARNING!

Always review and follow Repair Manual CAUTIONS and WARNINGS whenever working on the electrical system!

Locate and remove fuel pump (FP) relay (409) on Fuse/Relay Panel.

Note:

Number in parenthesis indicates control number stamped on the relay housing.

Install fuel pump relay Part No: 1J0 906 383B (with green dot on relay) or fuel pump relay Part No: 1J0 906 383C.

-

Erase stored DTC's.
