Knock Sensor: Testing and Inspection
Knock sensor, checking
Vehicles WITHOUT On-Board diagnostic capability CANNOT have the knock sensor functionally checked.
The complaint "high speed not attainable" can be caused by an intermittent or non-functioning knock sensor.
Possible causes:
- disconnected wiring
- corroded terminals (poor or no contact)
- knock sensor shield damaged
- mounting bolt incorrectly torqued; must be 20 Nm (15 ft lb)
- abnormal noises caused by:
-
torn or loose brackets
-
loose wiring
-
loosened components
-
broken, loose or missing bolts
-
mechanical damage
If NO fault found
- replace knock sensor
NOTE:
When repairing a connection to or replacing an engine management system component (i.e. Knock Sensor, Mass Air Flow Sensor, Throttle Position
Sensor, etc.), ensure the mating connector terminals are made of the same material and that the terminals are not damaged or corroded.
lithe component has gold plated terminals but the mating harness does not, replace the mating harness connector terminals with gold plated terminals. If
the mating harness has gold plated terminals but the component does not, replace the component.
