No Start/Hard Start/Poor Running (Distributor Cap Arcing)

Model(s): Corrado and All Vehicles with 16V engines from 1987 m.y.

Condition

High tension arcing on distributor caps, resulting in poor starting and poor running.

Service

If customer complaints are received describing difficult starting, poor running or won't start at all, check the following before making adjustments or
performing other troubleshooting.

Note

This Technical Bulletin provides information regarding arcing and carbon tracking on distributor caps with (black plastic) static suppressor shield only.

remove distributor cap

^

inspect inside of cap for arcing and carbon tracking

^

remove ignition wires from distriblitor cap and visually inspect wires
^

ensure that terminals are strong and clean, replace any wires with burned terminals

^

measure resistance of ignition wires and distributor rotor, replace any that do NOT meet specifications
^

spark plug connector - 5,000 +/- 1,000 Ohms

^

cap connector    1,000 +/- 200 Ohms

^

coil connector    1,000 +/- 200 Ohms

^

distributor rotor - 1,060 +/- 200 Ohms

^

remove static noise suppressor, A (black plastic) from distributor cap

^

inspect outer surface of distributor cap for arcing and carbon tracking (arrows)

IF carbon tracking is present:

^

install new distributor cap with suppressor (sold as an assembly)

Note

Before assembling cap, you may use a dielectric spray on the outer surface of the distributor cap and on the inner surface of the suppressor shield to
further reduce the possibility of arcing.
